Cornish Pasty at Moonta

Completed May 27, 2023

Ticking off another item on the “50 Before 50” list, I made a special trip to Moonta to finally enjoy a Cornish pasty. Despite having a holiday home there for almost a decade, I never got around to trying one before we sold the property. It felt like the perfect opportunity to make a return visit and experience a local favourite.

Moonta has a rich history tied to Cornish pasties, thanks to its Cornish mining heritage. In the 19th century, Cornish immigrants settled in the area, bringing with them their culinary traditions. The Cornish pasty became a staple for miners, who needed a hearty, portable meal to sustain them during their long shifts underground. The pastry’s design allowed it to be eaten with dirty hands, and its robust filling made it a practical and satisfying lunch.

And how did I find it? The pastry was perfectly crisp, and the filling was a great blend of meat and veggies. It was a delicious way to connect with the local history and celebrate a unique part of Moonta’s heritage.

I’m glad I finally got to enjoy a Cornish pasty in its rightful place!
