Adelaide Gaol

Completed July 28, 2024

I can’t believe I’ve never been here!

The morning started with bubbles and breakfast at Saints Kitchen with 3 of my favourite people, Leigh, Maria, and Jude. None of us had ever been to the Gaol, and we were surprised by how big it was! Walking through the historic corridors, we were transported back in time, imagining the lives of those who were once incarcerated there.

Adelaide Gaol, one of the oldest remaining colonial public buildings in Adelaide, was operational from 1841 to 1988. It housed some of the state’s most notorious criminals and witnessed a total of 45 executions during its 147 years of operation. The gallows and the graves of those who were executed added an eerie and somber touch to our visit. Reading the stories of inmates who swore their innocence, we couldn’t help but feel a chill down our spines.

After exploring the gaol and soaking in the rich history, we finished off with a cheeky beverage at the Casino. The contrast between the solemnity of the Gaol and the lively atmosphere of the Casino made for a perfect end to our day.

Thanks, gals, for a great day with lots of laughs, as always. ????

48 down, 2 to go! 1 month to do it! ????
