Visit my Hometown of Hamley Bridge

Completed January 4, 2024

It had been a really long time since I visited my hometown of Hamley Bridge. Joining me on this sentimental trip were my dad, my brother, and my nephew.

Our day was packed with meaningful stops and cherished moments:

  • Drinks at the Hamley Hotel: The recently renovated Hamley Hotel looked fantastic, and it was awesome to see that the original archway my Dad built is still a part of the place.
  • First House Purchase: I took a nostalgic trip to the first house I bought at 19 with my best friend Leah. This house, built by my great grandparents, holds many fond memories of staying with my Nanna and Popsa. It was bittersweet to see it in a state of neglect, with a dead garden and paint that hasn’t been touched in over 30 years. Once lovingly renovated by us, it has now lost its former charm. Sometimes I really regret selling it. So much family history being neglected.
  • Family Home: We swung by the house where our family lived together, which was a lovely trip down memory lane. The house looked a lot smaller than I remembered.
  • The Church: We revisited the church where Mum and Dad tied the knot, and where I where I once attempted Sunday School (a very brief stint!)
  • Past Family Houses: We also took a look at the houses where Mum and Dad spent their teenage years (and got up to all sorts of mischief), as well as the house where my nephew was conceived.
  • Local Cemetery: Visiting the local cemetery allowed us to pay our respects and remember our relatives who have passed. Most of our family are laid to rest here.
  • Dad’s Monument: The biggest highlight for me was checking out the commemorative monument Dad built for a church when he was just 14. It was crafted from the stone of the original church, and it was amazing to see that his work still standing strong
  • Local Swimming Spots: We visited the local swimming pool and some favorite swimming holes.

This visit was a wonderful reminder of where I come from and the many memories that shape who I am. Thanks to my family for making the day so special and for filling my bucket with joy and nostalgia. ????
