Go on the Popeye

Completed September 30, 2023

The Popeye in Adelaide holds a special place in my heart because it brings back childhood memories of the cruises we would take when having a day out in the City to go to the Adelaide Zoo. It’s a State Heritage icon that cruises the River Torrens daily, but it had been many years since I last stepped aboard. So, as part of my “50 before 50” challenge, I decided it was time to revisit this beloved local gem.

This was an opportunity to appreciate something uniquely Adelaidean that I had almost forgotten. To make the occasion even more special, we opted for a Devonshire tea experience on board. The scones were delish!

I’ll admit, my attention was more on socialising than listening to the commentary from our local guide. I was too engrossed in conversation with my friends to catch all the historical facts and stories being shared (although I do think they were trying to listen to him and secretly wanted to tell me to be quiet). But what I did take in were the stunning views along the River Torrens and the joy of spending quality time with friends.

This experience reminded me to take the time to enjoy the beauty in our own backyard. The Popeye cruise was an adventure of blending old memories with new ones.
